Rajkummar Rao (born Raj Kumar Yadav) hails from an Ahir (Yadav) family from Gurgaon, Haryana. In India's caste classification, the Yadav community is generally categorized as an Other Backward Class (OBC). [1, 2]

The actor has roots in a modest, working-class background; his father, Satya Prakash Yadav, worked in the Haryana revenue department. Early in his career, he dropped "Yadav" and adopted "Rao" as a screen surname to avoid confusion with other celebrities, explaining that Rao is an alternate title used by Yadavs
